No-Sugar January (A Freedom-Focused Challenge)
Every late December, I feel it.
Both the appeal and the dread of no-sugar January.
After the indulgence of the holidays—the extra treats, the desserts that seem to appear everywhere, the little exceptions and “just a little bit” bites that slowly add up—January feels like a clean page. I feel the urge to return to myself.
I have done no-sugar January most years for about the past decade. (It usually starts with enjoying one last sweet like vegan ice cream on December 31st and thinking, “This is it for a while, it’s just dates and mangoes from here!”)
I do no-sugar January:
Not because sugar is evil.
Not because it can’t fit into a healthy diet.
But because I don’t want to feel addicted to anything.
And the freedom that comes from knowing I am in control of my habits (not the other way around) is worth revisiting every single year.
It’s also hard to challenge myself, and so there is a bit of dread in there, not going to lie, haha.

Why I’m Doing No-Sugar January (and Why It’s Different)
Let me say this right up front:
I don’t believe we have to avoid added sugar 100% of the time to be healthy.
I personally avoid white and powdered sugar almost always, but I do use some brown sugar, coconut sugar, and maple syrup fairly regularly.
I think added sugar can be tolerated in a nourishing diet, especially when it helps us eat more nutrient-dense food.
A splash of maple syrup in a homemade salad dressing (like this Maple Balsamic dressing) that makes you want to eat a giant bowl of greens? I’m all for that.
Some coconut sugar in Chocolate Hummus to help me eat black beans with my apple slices? Surely it’s worth it!
A drizzle of maple syrup in oatmeal that helps you happily eat berries, flaxseed, and whole grains? That sounds like a win to me.
This challenge is not about demonizing sugar.
It’s about stepping back long enough to ask an honest question:
“Is this something I enjoy occasionally… or is it something that quietly controls me?”
For me, taking a full month off sugar (especially after the holidays) feels like a reset button. A way to prove to myself that I can pause, choose intentionally, and reconnect with how I actually want to feel.
As I often think, “It feels SO good to feel good!” It’s worth every sacrifice in my opinion.
What “No Sugar” Means (You Get to Choose)
One thing I care about with this challenge is flexibility with intention.
There is no single “right” way to do No-Sugar January.
Instead, you choose your level of no sugar.
Here are a few examples:
- Maybe you’re avoiding refined sugar, but still allowing honey or maple syrup
- Maybe you’re avoiding all added sugars for the month (sweetening only with fruit and dates)
- Maybe you have a January birthday and you decide to enjoy traditional dessert that day. Then, hop right back in!
- Maybe you’re focusing only on desserts and sweet treats, but not stressing about sauces or condiments
The most important part isn’t which rules you choose.
It’s that you decide your rules ahead of time.
Because the hardest moment is never the planning stage—it’s the moment of temptation.
Standing in the kitchen.
At the grocery store.
In front of the cookie tray.
When we haven’t decided ahead of time, every choice becomes a negotiation.
This challenge helps you decide now, with a clear head, so you’re not making decisions in the heat of the moment.
And just as important:
If you slip up, you don’t quit.
You don’t spiral.
You don’t throw the month away.
You give yourself grace… and you hop right back in.
That skill alone is incredibly powerful. Choose progress over perfection!
